Companies often explain their purpose through a mission statement. For me, ImagineHealth’s purpose is inseparable from a person: Gabriel Iordache - Gabi - a patient who became a friend, colleague and lasting source of perspective.
His story taught me what it means to keep looking for possibility without losing sight of honesty, dignity or the realities a patient faces.
A life changed at fourteen
Gabi sustained a spinal-cord injury in a diving accident when he was fourteen. The injury left him with quadriplegia and transformed every aspect of the future he had imagined.
When I met him years later in Qingdao, China, he was seeking regenerative treatment. What stood out first was not his condition, but his optimism. He had completed university, built a career, supported his parents and created a full life under circumstances most people would struggle to comprehend.

From patient to friend
I had worked with many international patients, but Gabi changed how I understood facilitation. He was informed, determined and willing to travel because he believed another possibility might exist. He also understood uncertainty.
Our relationship continued as we explored developments in neuromodulation and spinal-cord injury care. Gabi later joined our team, using his own experience to help other patients approach difficult decisions with greater understanding.
The standard he set
Gabi died from an infectious disease in 2020. ImagineHealth was still an idea at the time, but the principles behind it had already become clear.
People exploring healthcare far from home need more than access. They need someone prepared to listen, explain, coordinate and remain present - without making promises that medicine cannot guarantee.
A purpose that continues
ImagineHealth exists to help people and organisations move credible possibilities forward. We value innovation, but we value trust and candour just as strongly.
Gabi’s determination continues to remind me why that balance matters. His story is not a claim about any single treatment. It is the human reason we keep asking how healthcare journeys can be handled with more clarity, empathy and responsibility.
